Sometimes
the young hoglets are too small to reach over the rim of
the 'bowl', (a terracotta 'plant-pot' dish), and so they
just climb on in to enjoy the treat. |
I
have since heard that the very youngs ones may have difficulty
chewing whole peanuts, and so I am careful to crush the kernels
if there is any chance that hoglets are about, though these pictures
were taken before I started doing this.
The
young are soon able to fend for themselves, and I have seen them
'attacking' their older siblings in order to get first shares
of the food. They do this by 'ramming' the sides of the other
hedgehogs with their snouts lowered slightly. This can sometimes
get quite violent with the recipient ending up being pushed several
feet across the garden.
